Tuscan Canvas
Designed by
Chris Thornton-Deason |
Create a canvas with visual and textural interest to complement your Tuscan Glassware (featured in the April issue of Quick & Easy Painting). The main design is painted on watercolor paper and attached to the canvas. Grapes are stamped onto paper tags with backgrounds of your choice. Cardstock squares are stamped and attached to the canvas. Texture Magic-filled stencils add dimension to the finished piece. Let your creativity flow as you create this Tuscan-inspired canvas. Canvas
- Use the sea wool sponge to basecoat canvas with Sandstone, randomly adding soft touches of Dark Forest Green and Dark Brown into the wet Sandstone.
- Apply spray adhesive to the large fleur de lis stencil, allow to dry, and pat off excess spray with paper towel. Press stencil firmly in place in center right area of canvas. Use wedge sponge to lightly stencil with Oyster White.
- Create a glaze mix of Faux Finish Glaze Base + Dark Brown (2:1), and apply over entire canvas using the wash/glaze brush. Press on crumpled plastic wrap and lift immediately, allowing finish to remain darker around edges.
- Apply spray adhesive to fleur de lis stencil from Décor Accents stencil, allow to dry, and pat off excess spray with paper towel. Press stencil firmly in place. Use a wedge sponge to pick up small amount of glaze mix from step 3, pat on palette to remove excess, and pat on open areas of stencil. Repeat as desired (see color photograph for suggested placement). Set canvas aside and allow glaze to dry.

Watercolor paper
- Cut the watercolor paper into a 14"x18" rectangle with rounded corners. Basecoat twice with Oyster White using the wash/glaze brush. On the second basecoat, slip-slap a little Royal Plum, Dark Forest Green, and Hippo Grey into the brush. Keep these very faint to create a soft, muted background.
- Place a large rectangle stencil (approximately 7"x9") in the upper right corner of the watercolor paper. Stencil with a wedge sponge and a glaze mixture of Oyster White + Faux Finish Glaze Base. Outline rectangle with the script liner and Eucalyptus, keeping the corners rounded.
- Apply grape stencils inside the smaller rectangle. Using the wedge sponges, pat leaves by loading one half of sponge in Eucalyptus and the other half in Dark Forest Green, pat on palette to blend colors, then pat on leaves and stems. Stencil grapes by loading sponge in Royal Plum and GP Purple.
- Stencil a 5"-dia. circle at the lower left corner of the rectangle using a wedge sponge loaded in Eucalyptus and Dark Forest Green. When dry, lightly stencil an Oyster White fleur de lis off-centered in the circle. Outline circle with the dark brown glaze mixture used in steps 3 and 4 on the canvas.
- Use the small calligraphy letters to stencil the words "Zinfandel" and "bottled 1987" (or words/dates of choice) with a mix of Royal Plum + Hippo Grey (1:1). Use this same mix and the large calligraphy letters to stencil "the WINERY" (or other words of choice) on the bottom right corner of the canvas.
- Trace and transfer pattern for glass. Basecoat wine with Royal Plum + a touch of Oyster White using the No. 14 shader. When dry, lightly float outline of glass with Hippo Grey using the No. 14 shader. Float Oyster White highlights with the No. 14 shader.
- Use Royal Plum + a touch of Oyster White to create a 1/2" border around the edge of the paper and a thinner band inside the border.
8. When dry, adhere painted watercolor paper to upper left side of the canvas with craft glue.

Paper tags
- If there is no background on your paper tags, base tags as desired using colors from the palette.
- Stencil grapes and leaves on tags in the same manner as the watercolor paper, varying the placement of the stencils for added interest.
- Adhere painted tags vertically on the upper left side of the painted watercolor paper.
|
Cardstock squares
- Pick up a small amount of Dark Brown on a wedge sponge, and pat excess color off onto the palette. Pat color onto image of square stamp of choice using a gentle, straight up-and-down motion. Do not apply color too heavily or it will fill in the fine cuts of the stamp. Press stamp firmly onto light brown cardstock and lift straight off; rocking or sliding stamp will cause blurred images. Repeat stamping process to create 8 squares.
- Cut the stamped images into 11/2" squares. Adhere squares as desired onto the canvas (see color photo for suggested placement).
|
Textured stencils Press design element of choice on canvas. Squeeze Almond Texture Magic straight from the tube onto stencil, spread with the Easy Grip Spreader, and carefully lift stencil. Repeat randomly as desired on canvas. Allow to dry and lightly antique these raised areas with a glaze mix of Faux Finish Glaze Base + Dark Brown (2:1).
|
| Finish |
- Base outer edge of canvas with Dark Brown. Extend this to create a 1/8" border around the front of the canvas. Let dry.
- Apply several coats of satin varnish to entire surface, allowing adequate drying time between applications.
