Note: Caution must be used when cutting and sanding gourds. Always wear safety eye goggles and a safety mask, and work in a well-ventilated area upwind of the gourd, as contact with the gourd can be dangerous and may upset your respiratory system.

  1. Cut gourd and sand.
  2. Basecoat entire piece with Tangelo Orange; let dry.
For a second basecoat; load the ¾" square wash with Tangelo Orange, pick up some Bright Orange and Burnt Orange on the same brush, and basecoat the entire gourd using a slip-slapping motion.
    Let dry.
  3. Trace pattern and lightly transfer it to the piece.

Paint

Pumpkin
Use the ¾" square wash to shade sections with Burnt Orange. Deepen shading with Burnt Orange + Sable Brown (1:1); let dry. Shade again with Espresso. Drybrush the middle of the sections using the ⅜" Possibilities brush with Bright Orange, and let dry. Highlight sections with Bright Orange + Cadmium Yellow (1:1). Highlight a small area in each section with Cadmium Yellow.

Leaves
Use the ½" square wash to base the leaves with Leaf Green, and shade with Forest Green. Add a second shade with Forest Green + Sable Brown (1:1), and let dry. Use the #2 oval dry brush to drybrush the leaves with Leaf Green + Cadmium Yellow (3:1), and highlight sections again with Leaf Green + Cadmium Yellow (1:1).

Vines
Use the #1 short liner to add vines with various shades of green from the palette, as desired.

Face
Use #2 oval drybrush to lightly drybrush cheeks with Santa Red. Base the mouth with Lamp Black #2 flat and use the handle end of a brush to dot eyes with Lamp Black.

Spider
Use the ½” square wash to base spider with Lamp Black + a touch of Titanium White, shade with Lamp Black, and highlight with Lamp Black + Titanium White (4:1). Line the “fur” with Lamp Black. Use the #1 short liner to create the mouth and teeth with Titanium White. Dot eyes with Titanium White. Base nose with Santa Red, and highlight with Tangelo Orange. Let dry.
