Quick & Easy Painting Free Online Project
Celebrate the Colors of Life — Delta Beach Boutique
These pieces were designed to complement our Seaside Collection featured in the August 2007 issue of Quick & Easy Painting. All of the pieces in the collection were done using the same patterns and stencils. You can arrange them as shown by following the color photos, or you can be creative, have fun and make your own.

Techniques
Fabric painting. To paint on fabric, use a wet-in-wet technique. Apply an even coat of Textile Medium to the entire design area on which you are working. Unless otherwise noted, use the fabric brushes, which are stiffer and work well for scrubbing.

Stenciling.
Spray stencil adhesive on back of stencil and let dry. Press stencil firmly in place. Pick up a small amount of paint in a stencil brush and pat on the palette to remove excess paint. Applying paint too heavily will cause color to bleed under edge of stencil. Use a straight up and down motion to pat on open areas of stencil.

CANVAS TOTE
PREP
Shell appliqués. Trace the two shell patterns onto tracing paper and transfer to the blue multi-colored fabric. Leave enough space between each pattern to accommodate a 1/8" border around the painted area. Do not cut out the shells at this time.
PAINT
  1. Scroll background. Use the scroll stencil to create some of the scrolls with Light Foliage Green and others with Tahiti Blue (refer to stenciling instructions in Techniques above). Repeat to cover background.
  2. Starfish appliqué. Base with Medium Flesh. Float or scrub Autumn Brown shading. Stipple Oyster White highlights, picking up a small amount of Medium Flesh. Refer to the Color Worksheet.
  3. Spiral shell appliqué. Base with Bamboo and shade by scrubbing or floating with Dark Chocolate. Highlight with White, and randomly add touches of Bubble Gum. Refer to the Color Worksheet.
  4. Scallop shell appliqué. Place the scallop shell stencil on the blue multi-colored fabric (refer to stenciling instructions in Techniques above). Base with Bamboo and remove stencil. Float or scrub Autumn Brown shading to define the sections of the shell. Scrub Light Foliage Green accents at the bottom of each section. Stipple Oyster White highlights to brighten.
FINISH
  1. Cut around shell appliqués, leaving a 1/8" border of the blue fabric showing. Glue appliqués into place as desired.
  2. Stitch beads into place as desired.

WOODEN PICKET PLANTER
PREP
  1. Apply an even coat of sealer to entire surface with the wash/glaze brush. Allow to dry and sand.
  2. Basecoat the surface White using the wash/glaze brush. Basecoat the band with a mix of Autumn Brown + Periwinkle Blue (1:1) using the No. 10 shader.
PAINT
Note: Refer to stenciling instructions in Techniques above.
  1. Starfish stencil. Use a stencil brush to lightly stencil with Medium Flesh. Reapply to darken shading in some areas. Repeat as desired around planter.
  2. Scallop shell stencil. Apply to the left of each starfish stencil. Use a stencil brush to lightly stencil with Light Foliage Green. Reapply to darken shading near the bottom of the sections.
  3. Spiral shell (dimensional). Press spiral shell stencil firmly in place (slightly overlapping the left side of each scallop shell) Squeeze a small amount of White and Almond Texture Magic directly onto the stencil. Use the spreader to smooth Texture Magic over entire shell stencil. Do not remove too much when spreading; you want this to be very thick for dimension. Let dry.
FINISH
  1. Antique picket planter with a mix of Faux Finish Glaze Base + Dark Chocolate (1:1). Use the wash/glaze brush to apply glaze mix and immediately wipe with a soft cloth, allowing excess to remain in cracks and crevices.
  2. Apply several coats of satin varnish.
