Quick & Easy Painting 2004 Issues

Tis the Season for Sharing… And with that thought in mind, this issue features a host of painting projects for your gift-giving needs. If you’ve ever been the recipient of a handmade gift, then you know that they can often mean more than a store-bought item. Paint a panda bowl for the bear lover close to your heart. Use John Sliney’s sheep design on a round stool or bentwood box or reduce the pattern and use part of it on an ornament or pin. Reneé Mullins’ tin tree design and Sandy Holman-Sackett’s cabinet pattern can both be adapted to fit a wooden sled. Donna Wood’s painted stoneware makes for a lovely gift. Fill Antoinette Cox’s Christmas Favorites Recipe Box with some treasured holiday recipes to share with others. Use the cookie and candy pattern from Chris Thornton’s design for a holiday recipe box or a cookie jar. Chris’ set of stacking tins is a perfect housewarming gift. Fill the tins with various cookie cutters, miscellaneous baking paraphernalia, and cookies, too, of course!

While you’re painting up ornaments, consider adapting some of these designs to other surfaces. Gift tags are a natural choice, but have you ever thought of turning them into pins, magnets, or plant pokes? Some can be enlarged to fit chairs, sweatshirts, or pillow covers; others would be perfect if reduced to fit a pendant or watch face. Let your imagination lead the way. We also encourage the use of some of these designs for group activities—especially those involving children (Brownies, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H clubs, youth groups, etc.). Have them paint an ornament and personalize it with a message for someone special. What a great Christmas gift! Cookie swaps are popular during the holiday season. Why not plan something similar with a new twist—have an ornament swap. Or, even more fun, plan a party and paint ornaments “round-table” style (kind of like an assembly line process). Each participant can be assigned a different task, passing around the ornaments until complete. This is great social time as well!

Autumn’s arrival surrounds us with a rich, vibrant palette of colors. In this issue, we present a host of home décor possibilities that spans a variety of styles for every room in your house. Whether you choose to transform an old 33-1⁄3 LP record into a functional clock or paint a striking autumn scene on a metal plate, there’s something for everyone. Customize a wine carafe or create autumn charger plates for those special seasonal gatherings. Decorate your home for Halloween and hang a fall “Welcome” sign by your entryway. Perhaps you’ll enjoy painting in the style of Grandma Moses or discover easy techniques for painting basket weave and for creating faux brick. These are only a highlighted part of the issue—there’s certainly much to choose from. This month’s “Accents for the Home” column, The Coordinated Kitchen, features an Italian-themed collection of kitchen and dining favorites. Using easy painting techniques and a combination of stamps, stencils, mediums, and paints, you can give your kitchen a fresh, new look for the harvest season.

Brighten your surroundings with a custom-painted patio set, just in time for summer entertaining. Decorate the great outdoors! The surfaces featured in “Accents for the Home”—Bloomin’ Outdoor Décor are just a few suggestions as to how you can incorporate cheerful botanical designs into your lifestyle. Mix and match the versatile motifs with other surfaces—including: windchimes, patio umbrellas, stepping stones, plant markers, fence posts, mailbox covers, and seasonal banners, all of which will reflect the spirit of summer. Trudy Beard’s “Try This!” column highlights delicately painted vintage roses that can be adapted to a host of surfaces. The feature project is a turned wooden container; however, Trudy painted up few other options. Dainty gift boxes adorned with an adaptation of this rose motif eliminate the need for gift wrap—the recipient will appreciate the “wrapping” as much as the gift. Tapered tin cones are a perfect choice for summer wedding favors; they can also be used to hold a napkin on an elegant table setting.
